Recipe Editor Reference

Here's a description of all the fields of the Recipe Editor. For tips on editing recipes, see the Recipe Editor Tips article.

Other than the Name, all of the fields are optional. You only need to fill in the information you care about.

Name

Give your recipe a title.

Labels

Select labels ("tags") for your recipe to help categorize it. See the Labels article for more information.

Headnote

The headnote appears above the ingredients and instructions when you view a recipe, alongside the Featured Image. You can use this for an overview of the recipe, or the story behind it, or whatever you want.

Ingredients

List all the ingredients for your recipe. The Ingredients section has two tabs.

The Ingredients tab displays the ingredients in a grid, where the quantity, measurement, ingredient name, and notes are all in separate fields. The ingredients list is stored this way to make it easier to do things like scaling the recipe and generating a shopping list.

If you're pasting in your ingredients list, or just don't want to deal with the grid, you can switch to the Free-Form Ingredients tab and enter the ingredients there, one per line. See the Recipe Editor Tips article for information on how to format your ingredients when you enter them this way.

Once you finish entering Free-Form Ingredients, switch back to the main Ingredients tab and Recipe Tamer will read what you've written and put it in the grid. Make adjustments to the grid as necessary to make sure everything is right.

Headings

Sometimes your ingredients list may have several sections, like "Marinade" and "Pan Sauce." To include a heading:

  • In the grid view, just type your heading in the Notes box and leave everything else empty.
  • In the free-form view, type the heading on a line by itself, with "*" around it:
    * Pan Sauce *

Reordering and Deleting Ingredients

When you select a row in the grid you'll see a reorder symbol on the left side. Drag this handle to move an ingredient up or down in the list.

You'll also see a delete (trashcan) button on the right. Click this to remove an ingredient.

Instructions

Describe the steps to prepare the recipe. For best results, use a numbered list (click the button in the toolbar) to number your recipe steps. This allows Recipe Tamer to recognize each individual step so it can do things like highlighting the current step when you're cooking a recipe.

If you need to insert some notes ahead of or after the instructions, you can do that outside the list. And you can have multiple lists with headings in between (for example, one set of steps for the cake and one for the icing).

Notes

Use the Notes section to enter any additional notes that should follow the instructions but aren't part of the instructions. This could be additional details about special ingredients, or about how the recipe was developed, or tips (or reminders) about how to make the recipe. These notes will be visible to anyone you share the recipe with.

There's another kind of note available on the recipe View page. Here you can add a note each time you prepare the recipe, to keep notes about how it went or whom you served it to.

Private Notes

The Private Notes section works just like the Notes section, except that these notes aren't visible to other people you share the recipe with (except household members, who can see the private notes).

Nutrition Information

If you have nutrition information for your recipe, you can enter it here.

Excerpt

The Excerpt should be a brief description of the recipe. It's what gets shown in the search results.

Featured Image

The Featured Image is the image that appears at the top of the recipe when you view it, and in search results. If you don't select a featured image, Recipe Tamer will use the first image it finds in the recipe.

Source

Use the Source section to record where the recipe came from. This can be a simple note like "From Mom," or the name of a Web site, or the name and author of a cookbook.

Source URL

The Source URL is the address of the Web page where the recipe came from. If you enter this, Recipe Tamer will show a link back to this page when you view the recipe. If you imported the recipe from a Web site using one of the import tools, this will be set automatically and cannot be changed.

Active Time and Total Time

The Active Time is the amount of time you're actually busy doing things (related to making the recipe, not drinking a cocktail or whatever) to make this recipe. The Total Time is the total time, including resting (dough, not yourself), proofing, chilling, cooking.

For both times enter total minutes or "hours:minutes" or "days:hours:minutes".

Servings and Yield

The Servings should be the specific (whole) number of servings that the recipe makes. This is used to calculate nutrition for the recipe or to scale it up or down. The Yield can be more descriptive and less exact. It could be a serving range ("2 to 3 servings"), quantity ("24 cookies") or volume ("makes 2 quarts").

Rating

Use the Rating to rate the recipe on whatever scale is meaningful to you. For example, 1 star means "I hated it" and 5 stars mean "I love it." Or if you only want a yes-or-no rating, you could use only 5-star (like it) and 1-star (didn't like it) ratings.

Last Made

Keep track of the last time you made this recipe. You can set the date here, and you can update it each time you make the recipe by adding a History Note.

Visibility

The Visibility setting determines who can else can see your recipe. See the Sharing Recipes article for more information about the available settings.

By default all recipes are created as Private. You can change this default in your Account Settings.

Attachments

Attachments are files that are saved with your recipe and available when you view it. Attachments can be pictures, PDFs (a scan of the original recipe, for example), word processing documents, or just about anything else.

If you attach pictures using the Attachments section, those pictures will appear in a list with other attachments at the bottom of the recipe when you view it. If you want to include pictures in the text of the recipe (for example, to include step-by-step photos in the Notes), use the image selector ( ) in the field where you want the image to appear. See the Recipe Editor Tips article for more information.
